Unlocking the Magic with The Wild Card Kids

Our theme comes from the book The Wild Card Kids by Hope and Wade King. In the story, five students find themselves pulled into an extraordinary interactive game filled with unexpected challenges. To complete their journey, the characters learn that true "magic" isn't about luck or spells—it is created by mastering five daily habits: Make eye contact and give attention, Accept mistakes, Get up and go for it, remember there is no I in team, and Celebrate the success of others.

September’s Focus: "M" is for Making Eye Contact & Giving Attention

Our focus for the month of September centers on the letter M: Make eye contact when you talk to someone or give them your attention.

Throughout The Wild Card Kids, the main characters realize that working together is impossible when their attention is divided. To solve the game’s tricky puzzles, they have to stop, put away distractions, look each other in the eye, and truly listen. By giving their peers full attention, they build trust, communicate clearly, and unlock the first step of their magical journey.

How We Are Practicing "M" at School

Active Listening: Practicing turning our eyes and bodies toward teachers and classmates whenever someone is speaking.
Warm Greetings: Encouraging friendly eye contact and clear verbal greetings when entering classrooms each morning.
Respectful Connections: Building empathy by showing friends that their words and thoughts are valued enough to receive our full, undivided focus.

Bring the Magic Home

You can help reinforce September's habit with a few simple practices at home:

Device-Free Moments: Practice making direct eye contact during dinner or car rides while sharing updates about the day.
The "Focus Pause": When your child wants to tell you something, pause what you are doing, turn, and give them your full attention to model the behavior.
Acknowledge Effort: Notice and praise moments when your child stops to look at you directly while talking or listening.

Traffic Flow for Drop-off and Pick-up

Parking on the street is not permitted except where there is an additional 3rd lane with designated parallel parking spots.

Families are highly encouraged to enter the Skyline car line from the north via Rawhide Road to 210th St to avoid cars stacking to turn left into our school. Please share this info with any family members or childcare providers that will be coming to drop off or pick up.

Lunch

Parents are welcome to visit their child for lunch during their lunchtime. You will have a separate table to sit at with your child. Outside food is allowed, but please do not bring any outside food items for children other than your own. We ask that this be reserved for special occasions such as birthdays.

Birthdays

We are happy to celebrate your child’s birthday, or half birthday if it is in the summer. Any food items will NOT be allowed to be brought in, but feel free to bring any knick knacks or trinkets to share.
